In many ways, giving is at the core of everything we do as humans. Whether it’s the roles we take as parents, teachers, or friends, or even a simple act of kindness like smiling at a stranger, giving reflects our innate need to connect and share.

Giving Tuesday, held on 3 December, is a global movement that celebrates kindness and connection. It reminds us of the joy in giving and invites us to refocus on what truly matters beyond the busyness of the season.

Whether it’s offering time, resources, or expertise, generosity has the power to strengthen communities and transform lives. At Musica Viva Australia, we see this every day in the contributions of our donors, educators, and musicians, whose involvement ensures that music continues to inspire and enrich lives across the country.

For Sascha, one of our team members, giving is about shared experiences. "As someone who lives away from most of my family, I love giving experiences we can share. I usually find a concert (like Jess Hitchcock & The Penny Quartet for 2025) for my mum, and I usually get my dad a double pass to a play—something we can talk about and discuss after the fact." Stories like Sascha’s remind us that music isn’t just an art form; it’s a way to connect.

This generosity also drives the programs that define Musica Viva Australia. Thanks to the support of our donors, students across Australia experience live music—often for the very first time. Teachers gain valuable skills through professional development, while initiatives like the Strike A Chord competition and FutureMakers provide emerging artists with mentorship and opportunities to shape the future of chamber music. These programs, and many others, thrive because of those who give.

One teacher at a regional school described the joy in their classroom after students experienced a live performance. "The students were buzzing with excitement," they said. "Some of them are now talking about learning an instrument." Moments like these show the transformative power of music, often only made possible by generosity. Giving Tuesday reminds us that every act of giving—whether resources, time, or simply sharing a love of music—has a lasting impact. As Zoë, another Musica Viva Australia team member, says, "We don’t need more stuff—we need the chance to make memories with friends and loved ones." For us, music is the perfect way to create those memories.

This Giving Tuesday, we want to thank everyone who supports us. To the donors who believe in the power of music to bring people together, and to the teachers and artists who inspire creativity every day: thank you.

Your contributions, big or small, create a legacy of connection and creativity. From all of us at Musica Viva Australia, thank you for being part of our journey to create a music-rich future.
