An avian felon from a 17th-century fairytale has repaid its debt three times over for composer Alice Chance, the Affinity Quartet, and Musica Viva Australia supporter, Alison Kerry. Alison and her husband Geoff are the commissioning partners of Gifts from a Thieving Bluebird, a seven-minute composition for string quartet by Alice Chance, written for the Affinity Quartet. Full of lyricism and drama, the piece had its world premiere at a Sydney Morning Masters concert in October, and Alison is delighted with the result.

‘How much can you do in seven minutes?’ she says. ‘Alice packed in an entire storyline and it was fantastic – the characters of the story and all the movement and intricacy really came through.’ In writing the music, Alice took cues from Schubert’s ‘Death and the Maiden’ – played in the same concert as her piece – and from a story by French writer Madame d’Aulnoy, L’Oiseau bleu (The Bluebird).

‘A commission like this really gives you the time to dream about what the piece could be,’ Alice says. ‘It enabled me to work in ideal circumstances and focus on making something I’m proud of.'

‘I like to write for real circumstances and real people.’

Alison, Alice and the Affinity Quartet’s cellist, Mee Na Lojewski, share a common musical lineage. All had the benefit of exposure to music through Musica Viva Australia In Schools. Alison remembers a visit by an MVAIS ensemble to her school in Orange, NSW, which motivated her to join the school band. A performance at Alice’s school in Sydney by Jenny Eriksson inspired her to take up the viola da gamba. Similarly, Mee Na first encountered the cello at an MVAIS performance. She went on to study at the Australian National Academy of Music, where she founded the Affinity Quartet in 2015.

The group has had a run of impressive achievements in recent years, with place-getting performances in competitions at Wigmore Hall, Salzburg and Bad Tölz, and then its triumph at the 2023 Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. The Melbourne win – the Affinity Quartet is the first Australian ensemble to take first prize at MICMC – led to the engagement with Musica Viva Australia for the Sydney Morning Masters concert and the world premiere of Gifts from a Thieving Bluebird

Mee Na says she is thrilled to have added the piece to the Affinity Quartet’s repertoire. ‘Today is the world premiere performance, but not the final one – we can’t wait to perform it many times and keep seeing what we can do with this amazing work,’ she says.

Alison says the commission grew out of conversations with Musica Viva Australia about how she could help Australian musicians, especially after the disruptions of Covid. The commissioning experience ‘really resonated with us’, she says, and she would recommend the adventure to others. ‘It’s a beautiful piece, and hopefully it keeps playing – it’s really worth everyone hearing,’ she says. ‘My thanks to Alice for such a great piece.’
