Tips for recording your Strike A Chord entry videos
In 2021 we spoke with Matthew Lorenzon who joined us for an online webinar to discuss his tips and best practices for recording your videos; from lighting to framing and everything in between!
This clip was produced in 2021 when Anne Frankenberg was the Deputy CEO – she’s now Musica Viva Australia’s CEO.
At the time of filming, Matthew Lorenzon was ABC Classic's Digital producer. We are now delighted to have Matthew as part of the MVA family in the role of Digital Marketing Manager.
Check out Matthew's tips for filming your entry video below.
LIGHTING AND ORIENTATION
- Ensemble in “concert set-up”, with the camera positioned as if it was in the audience. Be sure all musicians have clear sight-lines to each other to enhance communication when you perform.
- Musicians facing the main source of light. A big window without direct sunshine is best
- No bright lights in the background
ARTIFICIAL LIGHTS
- “45 degree rule” (keep lights 45 degrees to the side and above musicians)
- Reflect light off a wall, whiteboard, or place a bag over the light (if it’s a low-heat LED light) to diffuse harsh shadows
CAMERA AND FRAMING
- Film with rear camera (not the selfie camera)
- Camera steady on tripod or clip
- All players visible
- Ensemble fills the frame
- Camera raised to help fill the frame and improve audio
- Lock focus and exposure on ensemble
- Recommended video settings: 1080p 30fps
- Check there is enough space on the device so it doesn’t cut off. (>500mb)
SOUND
If using external microphones:
- Record in stereo with a stereo microphone or microphone pair.
- Place microphones around two metres in front of and above musicians
- Use “cardioid” or “omni” microphones, not shotgun
- Test to ensure all players are clearly audible and sound does not distort at loudest point
ACTION
- Don’t forget to hit record!
SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY:
Introduction video
This video will be used for publicity purposes only and will not have any influence on the decision of the judging panel.
You may be as creative as you wish with this video, including camera placement, editing, lighting, etc, as long as the voice/s are clearly audible throughout.
Introduction videos should be a maximum of 2 minutes, spoken to camera, and may be recorded in any location. Student responses may be filmed one at a time.
Here’s an example of information to include in your video, but you could just tell us something fun or interesting about your group!
- First name and instrument of each player in the group.
- Name of the group, and where the group is from (town/suburb/city and state, e.g. “Bowen, Queensland” or “Albany, Western Australia”).
- Brief responses to the following questions: Why did you choose this piece? What did you learn from playing it?
Example Introduction Videos
Performance video
The Performance video must be recorded in a single take. Videos may be recorded with any device, including smartphones, video or digital cameras, etc.
Groups are encouraged to test recorded sound quality in advance of the performance and make reasonable adjustments where necessary (e.g. microphone placement, camera placement) so that the judging panel can hear the group at its best.
Please ensure performers are dressed appropriately (e.g. school uniform, performance attire, etc), and that all players are clearly visible.
Video recordings must not be edited or processed to improve sound quality.
The recording device must be set in a static position throughout the performance, with no zooming in/out or moving during the performance. All performers must be visible throughout the video.
HAVE FUN!
Remember to relax and enjoy yourself throughout the entry process and while recording your video. It's ok if it takes a few tries to get it right.
